Mary (Kate Maberly) discovering secrets.
In The Secret Garden based on a best selling children's book by Frances Hodgeson Burnett, Kate Maberly plays Mary Lennox a ten-year-old girl, the spoiled daughter of an English Colonel stationed in India. Orphaned in a great earthquake, she is shipped back to the England to live with her uncle, The Lord Archibald Craven of Mistlethwaite Manor. She’s very solemn; not having even cried at her loss, she finds herself surrounded by strange people and customs and no friends. She quickly makes friends with a local, and begins to make a few discoveries about the new house and it’s secrets…

This is Kate's first feature film and is by far most recognized. I highly recommend this movie to viewers of all ages and backgrounds. It's by American Zoetrope, Francis Ford Coppola's Company so what do you expect? This is a true Masterpiece with out a doubt. Beautifully shot by Roger Deakins and accompanied by a wonderful original score by Zbigniew Preisner.

Favorite quotes:
"You..you daughter of a pig!", says Mary in reference to Martha thinking she might be a native (of India).
"I never had any friends before" says Mary. "That I'll Believe!" says Ben Weatherstaff, the grounds keeper.
"You are strange." says Mary. "Yeah, I know that!" says Martha, Mrs. Medlock's servant.
"Ah/Go/Oh alla goya, Hok hobie Hi-oh-da, al heya goya, hoy goy hi-oh-da" Mantra used in the father summoning spell.

Knit Picks:
When Mary falls into the sand in the opening scene it looks rather purposeful.
When Martha and Mary all talking over breakfast, a chunk of porridge flies from her mouth.
In the scene where Dickon is introduced, He really isn't hiding behind anything other than the camera's lack of view.
The Music box where the key is kept automatically resets itself to the beginning of greensleves again.
When Lord Craven visits his son at night, daylight is still shining through the windows outside his door.
Three pieces of music found in the film are not found on the soundtrack: during the scene where Lord Craven meets Mary for the first time; in the morning when Colin visited Mary at night in her bedroom; and the closing credits, but that is somewhat forgivable. It was Linda Ronstadt's 'Winter Light'.

Genre: Drama/Family  Rated G (By the Motion Picture Association of America) and in my opinion, this movie is fine for all ages.

Kate won a coveted 'Special Award' from the London Film Critics Circle for her 'Outstanding Performance in The Secret Garden. She was also nominated for Best Youth Actress Leading Role in a Motion Picture Drama by the Young Artist Awards.

John Lynch, Dame Maggie Smith, Andrew Knott, Heydon Prowse, Laura Crossley, Walter Sparrow, and Irène Jacob also stared in The Secret Garden. Directed by Agnieszka Holland. Adapted by Caroline Thompson.

Quality Kate Time: 10 out of 10.
